Post-doctoral position (F/M)
Full-contract, one-year term, starting from October 1 (or November 1), 2011 until September 30, 2012
Description
The position is offered for a researcher interested on the study of emotions and/or interpersonal relationships from a cross-cultural perspective. S/he will be part of Dr. Itziar Alonso-Arbiol's lab and expected to develop a project in the mentioned field and derive publications in cooperation with the Department of Cross-Cultural Psychology of Tilburg University (the Netherlands). The supervisor in the Netherlands will be Dr. Fons van de Vijver.
The postdoctoral fellow will develop his/her research agenda using international secondary databases such as ESS, WVS, and ISSP, and, if possible, other specific datasets containing emotion-related variables too (as published in articles by researchers). ESS, WVS, and ISSP are international databases based on a survey methodology for the analysis of relevant variables to understand social phenomena of current actuality. Data have been collected in several countries and in various waves for each database; they provide an invaluable source of information for sociologists, social psychologists, and cross-cultural psychologists to test their hypotheses and elaborate empirical findings. Variables of sociological, psychosocial and health nature are included in them.
The appointed candidate will design studies, analyze data, and write articles to be published in international journals. Studies would be within the broad area of interpersonal relationships and emotions from a cross-cultural perspective; there is quite flexibility here, but some preferred topics are marital satisfaction, gender-roles, subjective well-being, perceived discrimination, or helping behavior.
A possible research project might include the joint analysis of individual- and country-variables that explain psychological variables such as permissive sexual attitudes, or helping behavior. Some other examples might include the development of cross-country models for the explanation of psychological variables in interpersonal contexts or related to subjective well-being; for instance, the links between perceived discrimination, subjective well-being, and other psychosocial variables; or the analysis of marital satisfaction and life satisfaction based on satisfaction with the household distribution and other gender-role related variables.
The postdoctoral fellow may propose his/her own research planning outside the scheme of use of secondary databases. Nevertheless, additional data collection would imply providing own funding (or using already collected data) because no other financial resources are available for this project.
Requirements
Candidates should have a doctoral degree in cross-cultural psychology or a related discipline, with an interest in emotions and/or relationships. A good command of English is necessary and a command of any of the other languages where the project will be developed (Spanish or Dutch) would be an asset. The post-doc fellow needs good communication skills to cooperate in this international team and should have a good knowledge of design and analysis issues of cross-cultural studies. Previous research on emotion or interpersonal relationships from a cross-cultural perspective would be preferred. Candidates will be evaluated based on their publication records and research experience on the field.
Terms of employment
The post-doctoral candidate will become an employee of the University of the Basque Country (Spain), under the direct supervision of Dr. Itziar Alonso-Arbiol. However, long periods are expected to be spent at the Department of Cross-Cultural Psychology of Tilburg University (the Netherlands), where the other supervisor of the project (Prof. dr. Fons van de Vijver) is located. The gross salary is € 2311.13 (full-time, gross) per month. It is a 100% research position; teaching duties are not asked.
Information and application
You can contact the main supervisor, Dr. Itziar Alonso-Arbiol (phone +34 943015654; itziar.alonso@ehu.es), for further information of the position.
